HIV Testing

The Alere Determine Test (a finger stick whole blood test) is the first FDA approved rapid point-of-care test that detects both HIV-1/2 antibodies and free HIV-1 p24 antigen. This 4th generation test has the ability to identify HIV earlier than 2nd and 3rd generation antibody-only tests. It enables health care providers to diagnose HIV infection earlier allowing individuals to seek medical care sooner. You will get your test results in just 20 minutes and testing is confidential.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis or prEP is a medication that an HIV negative person can take to prevent  HIV infection. The medication is called Truvada (Tenofovir and Emtricitabine) and if taken once a  day, it can reduce the risk of HIV infection from sex by more than 90% and from injection drug use by more than 70%. Most health insurance companies cover Truvada including Medi-Cal and Medicare. Patients may need to pay a copay for the medication and may be eligible for co-pay assistance.

You can also get connected to the Contra Costa County PrEP Navigator at any time by calling 925-692-0090 ext. 339 and speak to Christian.
