SHIRLEY WILSON NAMED RAINBOW COMMUNITY CENTER’S
FIRST HONORARY HOMOSEXUAL
The Rainbow Community Center of Concord California will host its 11th annual Honor’s Night Gala June 30th at the Concord Holiday Inn. Shirley Wilson will be recognized for the many contributions that she has made to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer and Questioning (LGBTIQQ) Community. The Center’s board of directors felt that even though Shirley was not lucky enough to be born a homosexual that she should still be welcomed as an outstanding, loving and courageous member of our community.
Shirley has been a volunteer at the Rainbow Center since its beginnings in 1996. She has worked as a front desk receptionist, as a special events volunteer, and as a member of the agency’s board of directors. She has also been instrumental in developing the center’s Senior Services Program where she has organized monthly luncheons and teas. Shirley has catered the majority of these events herself. Due to her efforts many Lesbian and Gay senior citizens living in Contra Costa County have been given the opportunity to meet and receive support.
Michael Weinberger, the current RCC board president, states that “Shirley has done so much for the LGBTIQQ community that she has bridged the often wide gap that exists between the gay and straight worlds and in that way she truly has become one of us.”
Shirley is well known in the Contra Costa Lesbian and Gay community for the beautiful cakes she creates for couple’s weddings and domestic partnership ceremonies and that she brings to many of the Rainbow Center’s special events. Shirley has lived in the Contra Costa Community for almost all of her life. She worked as a meat wrapper at Safeway for 33 years. She is the mother of 5 children, 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Shirley will receive her honorary award at the Honor’s Night celebration held at the Concord Holiday Inn at 1050 Burnett Avenue, Concord, CA. The event will take place in a hall where Shirley prepared all of the flowers and the table decorations. Additional awards and presentations will celebrate and Honor the LGBTIQQ Youth involved in the center’s programs. Entertainment will be provided by comic Chris Doucette of Gaylarious (www.chrisdoucettecomedy.com).
